Assembled HIRMS System

Holographic Imaging Radar and Measurement System

The Holographic Imaging Radar and Measurement System (HIRMS) system was designed from a system specification supplied by the sponsor. The final document was the result of extensive collaboration between the sponsor and PNNL staff. From that technical document, conceptual designs were made and evaluated for system functionality and engineered simplicity wherever possible. Below can be seen an assembled CAD model and the final system.

The development of the engineered solution through interactions with the sponsor and state of the art 3-D modeling for conformation produced a true cutting edge design. The final product incorporates a 46-foot-long composite boom that has a deflection of less than one inch at the tip with a 200-pound weight attached. The entire system can be deployed or stowed in less than two (2) hours and is road legal in all 48 contiguous states.

The system was about 30 months to design and fabricate at a cost of $1.3M.
