Product Acoustic Signature System (PASS)

The Product Acoustic Signature System (PASS) is a portable, battery-operated, hand-held device that rapidly and reliably screens bulk containers in the field. By comparing the ultrasonic signature of the container to the known signature of the represented contents, the PASS enables checking for materials that can be used to build weapons of mass destruction, containers concealing contraband and illegal substances, and containers that have been fraudulently labeled. The PASS development team received an R&D 100 award for the work in 2003.

Mechanical Solutions Group engineers contributed to the development of the PASS by providing design and prototyping of the mechanical components and housings for the device.
