Drop Testing

The Mechanical Solutions Group conducted drops tests of a custom designed deployment case to insure the case would survive plausible transit drops while limiting the level of shock transmitted to the payload.
To support a Critical Design Review, several drop tests of the "full-up" deployment case were conducted to measure internal shock levels and to assess case, frame, packaging, and cooling fan survivability. The drop test frame was attached to the large gantry robot in the 338 Building to accurately set the drop height and orientation. Shock levels were measured with 2 tri-axial accelerometers connected to a high speed 8-channel data acquisition system.
